PANDORA'S BOX OFFICE

Art is not a mirror. It is a hammer. Hollywood used it on the family altar, and we paid for the ticket.

They took the pulpit. Film and television now tell a nation what is right and wrong. More screens than toilets. Five to six hours a day in a world of images. The average professing Christian spends six times more on entertainment than on all Christian giving combined.

It can sell sunglasses. It can sell a gospel. Ray-Bans jumped 1,400 percent after Risky Business. The same reel glamorized fornication and called it growing up.

The problem is not only Hollywood. Hell and destruction are never full, so the eyes of man are never satisfied. They give us what we buy.

The catharsis lie says embrace the darkness and you will come out clean. Scripture says woe to those who call evil good. Lead us not into temptation.

The Hays Code and the Legion of Decency held a line while the church still had salt. The offices closed. The code died in 1966. Taboo after taboo was not merely broken. It was erased.

MTV said it out loud: we own them. One hour a week with a father. Forty hours on the glowing box.

Rome filled an arena. We filled a multiplex. Telemachus climbed into the sand. The games ended. The church is still in the stands.

Then they sold another Jesus. Just a man. The right man at the right time. If He is not God, there is no redemption.

Watch over your heart. Set no worthless thing before your eyes. Lay aside the deeds of darkness. Put on the armor of light.
