Foxe opened Matthew 16 and wrote the rest of church history as proof. Christ would have a church. Hell would try it. The church would still be standing.
This set is the first waves.
The apostles carried the Name past the edge of the map. James kissed the man who walked him to the sword. Andrew greeted the cross like a friend. Peter asked for the beams upside down. Paul was led outside the city and beheaded.
Nero burned Rome in twelve places, sang Homer, and blamed the church. That was only the first of ten imperial hunts.
Polycarp: eighty-six years, and he would not curse the King who never wronged him.
Perpetua: twenty-six, a child at her breast. “I am a Christian.” When the young gladiator shook, she set the blade.
Lawrence: Rome wanted the gold. He gave them the poor. “These are the precious treasures of the church.”
Then the tenth wave. A cross in the southern sky. Not so the wood would be worshipped. So the Name would be carried. Three hundred years of empire failed at a river.
Wycliffe said the bread remains bread and the Gospel is enough. They burned his bones in 1428 and threw the ash in a river. Truth came up from the dust.
Hus went to Constance on a safe-conduct they broke. Paper hat: ARCH-HERETIC. Last sentence in the fire: “Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, have mercy on me.”
The record is not a relic. The Light is still in the street.
